Listening with real intent ignites the human mind, the quality of listening determines the quality of other people’s thinking.
In a hierarchy people can be equal thinkers. Knowing you will have your turn improves the quality of your listening.
Consulting Joy’s definition of a high performing team is one that builds passion, is cohesive and an entity where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This commonly held value is a driver that helps the team to operate on a motivated level where each team member holds each other accountable to deliver on the strategic initiatives in a streamlined way – their raison d’etre’.
By listening and giving each team member an equal opportunity to be heard, the environment can create a wellspring of ideas and contributions which can add to the reservoir of positive energy within the organisation.
The team coaching intervention which I offer can be seen not so much as team building, but rather as team forward momentum.
The programme begins with helping the team to identify:
- What makes successful teams thrive?
- The stages teams go through as they develop.
- What the teams Vision, Purpose and Core Values are, these are then translated into the operational goals for the team in alignment with the organisation’s overall strategy.
- Action and Accountability for the team members.
Team Coaching – polishing the team’s potential
Teams of people who have a common purpose and work together with a shared vision and set of values can be powerful agents for change within organisations. Reflection, planning, and a thinking environment which values the voices and opinions of each of the members of the team can be powerful catalysts for change. If teams genuinely adopt these principles and behaviours, this can distinguish how they relate to other people within the organisation as well as with their customers and suppliers.
The real value of team coaching tends to be in the emotional journey the team members go through, the confidence they develop being part of a team, the new skills they learn through transference and the new habits they build being part of a collective whole.
By focussing on a core set of commonly held values, team members will build mutual support structures, have open lines of communication built on trust and focus on company vision, keeping it alive whilst sharing responsibility. This is turn contributes to improved interaction and a new level of emotional intelligence which can be a catalyst for increased overall performance.
